The Grant Monument Association held a live online event to mark President Ulysses S. Grant’s birthday in 2020: a colloquy between General David Petraeus and Elizabeth Samet, the professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who published an annotated edition of Grant’s memoirs. Few if any figures in American history have been as misunderstood as Ulysses S. Grant. He has undergone a dramatic reassessment in recent years. Discussion covered historians’ changing views and aspects of Grant’s leadership and legacy that every student of history should know.

Grant Association. His extensive scholarship on the Civil War includes annotated editions of the memoirs of General Grant and (forthcoming) of General Sherman.

Learn moreOn Saturday, April 27, 2019, the National Park Service and the United States Military Academy at West Point will host the official government ceremony commemorating the 197th anniversary of President Grant’s birth. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m., rain or shine (inside the mausoleum in the event of inclement weather). The keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony will be Ron White, author of American Ulysses (2016). A book signing will follow the ceremony in the overlook pavilion across the street from Grant’s Tomb. In addition, West Point Cadets will provide an honor guard, conduct a wreath-laying ceremony, and fire a rifle salute.
On Sunday, April 28, 2019, join the Oliver Tilden Camp #26, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, for their annual commemoration of the birth of General Ulysses S. Grant at Grant’s Tomb. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. Many Civil War and other patriotic organizations will be in attendance and will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony during the commemoration. Speakers will include representatives of the Sons and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Association, and the Grant Monument Association.
