TEACHING GRANT

As millions of American youth return to school this fall, the Grant Monument Association (GMA) features “Teaching Grant,” a collection of stories about how students encounter the topic of U.S. Grant in classrooms and libraries.
How are publishers, authors, educators and other stakeholders impacting the perceptions of the publishers, authors, educators and other stakeholders of the future? Indeed, how are authorities “teaching Grant?”
Featured in this package of stories are interviews with specialists who offer their perspectives on Grant in the classroom, library trends in children’s nonfiction, and the publishing industry.

Children’s literature expert Elizabeth Hearne is an editor and reviewer of children’s books. She serves as director of the Center for Children's Books, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, a children’s book editor, and as a reviewer for Booklist and The New York Times

Joan Waugh is an Associate Professor of History at the University of California at Los Angeles. She is a leading scholar of Grant, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age. Marie Kelsey is a Grant enthusiast and bibliographer with broad experience in the library sciences. She is Assistant Professor at The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota.
Erin Bishop, Education Programs Administrator of the newly opened Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, offers a glimpse into how librarians and curators there work with students. Author Michael A. Schuman has written 28 books, including a children’s biography of Grant.

We are pleased to offer as well a cursory bibliography of recent children’s books about Grant published in the past 15 years, a snapshot of educational videos about the general and president, a listing from Kelsey of recommended books, and links to more information.
